Bill Lawrence, publisher of the Native American Press/Ojibwe News, shared the Freedom of Information Award for 2003 from the Minnesota chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.

Lawrence, a Red Lake Ojibwe tribal member, was recognized for seeking to make tribal casino audits public. Lawrence believes the move will make tribes more accountable to tribal members.

Lawrence has been affiliated with the Citizens Equal Rights Alliance (CERA), which opposes treaty rights and tribal sovereignty. His paper lobbied against a tribal initiative to have Minnesota's courts recognize tribal court decisions.
