As administrator in charge of Indian Education for the Sioux Falls School District in South Dakota, John Derby hopes to improve graduation rates of Indian students.

Currently, only about 25 percent of Native students finish high school. Derby says it could take 10 years to raise the rate to 50 or 75 percent.

The district's Indian Education office, which is partly funded with federal dollars, also offers cultural classes. There are nearly 800 Native students in the district.
