Maori tribe to press government on oil royalties

THURSDAY, MAY 22, 2003 A New Zealand tribal leader called the federal government a "resource thief" for refusing to consider compensating Maori tribes for oil and gas royalties a treaty commission said they were wrongly denied. The government in 1937 nationalized all petroleum resources. But doing so was a breach of the Treaty of Waitangi, a tribunal said this week. Get the Story:
