Tribal takeover of bison range moving forward

TUESDAY, MAY 20, 2003 The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is moving forward with plans to have the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes manage the National Bison Range in Montana. The agency held a public hearing in Montana last week but an official said nothing dissuades the government from changing its mind. Paul Hoffman, a deputy assistant secretary, said the tribes have a right, under the Indian Self-Determination Act, to manage resources they have cultural and historic ties to. Hoffman said the tribes will be able to adopt an Indian preference policy in managing the range. Get the Story:
