MONDAY, MAY 19, 2003 Rick Lupe, a longtime firefighter on the Fort Apache Reservation in Arizona, is in critical condition after suffering third-degree burns over 40 percent of his body, The Arizona Republic reports. Lupe was working on a controlled burn on the reservation when he was engulfed in flames. He is being treated at the Arizona Burn Center in Phoenix.
