Donna Loring may not be a voting member of the Maine Legislature but as a member and representative of the Penobscot Nation, she is using her position to lobby in favor of a tribal casino.

Loring, a former tribal police chief who served in the Vietnam War, says a casino will benefit the the tribe. She tells The Brunswick Times Record that concerns about the state's tourist industry are unfounded.

"How can he possibly get it?" Loring said of former Gov. Angus King, who opposes gaming. "How can a guy with all that money understand what it's like to be in poverty?"

The Penobscot Nation and the Passamaquoddy Tribe have proposed a $650 million casino. They are looking for a host community.
