The state of Rhode Island has asked a federal judge to dismiss the Seaconke Wampanoag Tribe's land claim.

State attorney general Patrick Lynch is arguing that the Indian Land Claims Settlement Act of 1978 extinguished all land claims in the state. Lynch says the tribe, which is not federally or state recognized, filed its claim too late.

The tribe wants to be compensated for a reservation it says it never received.
