TUESDAY, MAY 13, 2003 Teaching Native languages in public schools is important for Natives and non-Natives, The Denver Post says in an editorial. The paper praises the Denver public school system for offering a Lakota language class, one of the few in the nation. "The more people who speak a Native American language, the more likely it is that the history, traditions and culture of that tribe will survive, thrive and be passed on to future generations of Americans, both Indian and non-Indian," the paper says.
