N.Y. tribes protest state taxation proposals

Members of New York's tribes will protest tomorrow against legislative proposals to tax Indian businesses.

State lawmakers want to tax the sale of goods to non-Indians. They hope to patch up holes in the state budget.

But Indian business owners say the tax would hurt their business and is an infringement of tribal sovereignty.

The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that states can tax the on-reservation sales of cigarettes and gasoline to non-Indians. But the N.Y. courts have ruled that the state doesn't have to collect the taxes.
