Alaska Natives debunk federal funding myths

WEDNESDAY, MAY 7, 2003

Alaska Native leaders have gathered data to refute concerns by Senator Ted Stevens (R-Alaska), who has proposed to change the way Alaska tribes receive federal funds.

Through examination of tribal financial statements, federal budgets, and state and federal regulations, the leaders say Alaska Native tribes are spending their money wisely. They hope the information will resolve "myths" about Alaska Natives that Stevens was worried about.

Alaska has more than 200 federally recognized tribes and villages. Each is entitled to receive funds separately although inter-tribal organization and Alaska Native corporations, which are not tribes, also receive funds.
