Legislation would buy out Tar Creek residents

FRIDAY, MAY 2, 2003

Rep. Brad Carson (D-Okla.) proposed legislation to buy out homeowners in the Tar Creek Superfund site.

The site is contaminated by 70 million tons of mine waste. Most of the land is owned by Quapaw tribal members.

Carson said waiting for the federal government to clean up the waste would be futile. He criticized a memorandum of understanding between the Environmental Protection Agency, Army Corps of Engineers and Department of Interior as more red tape.

Under the agreement, the three agencies are accepting responsibility for cleanup of the site.

Carson will speak about Tar Creek at 3 p.m. today at the National Conference on Tar Creek, hosted by the L.E.A.D. Agency, Inc., at the Miami Civic Center.
