Oneida Nation awaits ruling on tax status

TUESDAY, APRIL 29, 2003 The 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals is set to decide whether local governments can tax land owned by the Oneida Nation of New York. The tribe successfully argued at a lower court that the land was part of its original reservation. The judge said the land becomes Indian Country when the tribe purchases it. The city of Sherill and Madison County believe they can tax the land. Get the Story:
