Mont. bill formalizes state-tribal relationship

TUESDAY, APRIL 29, 2003 The Montana Legislature passed a bill to formalize the state-tribal relationship. The bill sets out procedures for consultation with tribes and with the Montana-Wyoming Tribal Leaders Council. It is meant as a follow-up to proclamations issued by state governors. Rep. Jonathan Windy Boy (D), a member of the Chippewa-Cree Tribe, sponsored the bill. There are seven federally recognized tribes in Montana. The Little Shell Chippewa Tribe is in the final stages of recognition. Get the Story:
