FRIDAY, APRIL 4, 2003

A proposal to legalize up to eight casinos in Nebraska was approved 25-20 in a second round vote on Thursday.

The constitutional amendment needs 30 votes to survive a third round in the Legislature and make it to state voters. Backers are hopeful they can get the support.

The amendment would allow the state's four federally recognized tribes to operate casinos on tribal land. The full details would be left to lawmakers to sort out at a later date.
