Navajo Nation farmers in northern New Mexico are being offered money if they stop planting crops for the year and shut down their irrigation systems.

The deal is being offered as part of a larger agreement involving the use of water in the region. The San Juan Basin Recommended Water Use Agreement affects the tribe, local governments, the Jicarilla Apache Nation and also includes a controversial arrangement with two power companies and a coal company.
