The Supreme Court today hears oral arguments in a case challenging the affirmative action policies of the University of Michigan.

Three white applicants who were denied admission to the school filed suit. They contend their race was as a factor in violation of the U.S. Constitution.

The dispute has affected race relations on campus, The Washington Post reports. The independent student newspaper, run by white students, used expletives to describe the name of minority organizations. A white student held a bake sale offering discounts to African-American and Hispanic students.
