S.D. tax ruling leaves both sides wanting more

MONDAY, MARCH 31, 2003 The South Dakota Supreme Court last month barred the state from taxing gasoline that tribal members buy on reservations. But both sides of the case want the court to reconsider the decision. Loren "Bat" Pourier says he should be entitled to a refund of $940,000 in taxes he paid to the state. The court said tribal members were entitled to most of the refund. The state says the ruling needs to be clarified in order to determine how far back to calculate the refund. State attorney general Larry Long also thinks the case might reach the Supreme Court. Get the Story:
