When Karen Dullen was growing up in Alaska, she remembers being sent to a "bilingual" class set up for minority students.

But the students, most of whom were Alaska Native, weren't taught Native language or culture. "They were teaching us Spanish," Dullen told The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner. "We were Alaska Native majority and they were teaching us Spanish and we were cooking tortillas and I remembered that all my life. That really kind of just struck odd notes with me."

These kinds of experiences prompted Dullen, who is Inupiat Eskimo, to undertake a sabbatical. She will study the contact between Natives and missionaries.
