Mont. tribal members turn to prayer in time of war

THURSDAY, MARCH 20, 2003 Families on the Fort Belknap Reservation in Montana are praying for the safe return of loved ones now engaged in war against Iraq. One tribal member who served in Desert Storm 1991 was discharged from active duty in January. But two days later, he was reinstated and his Army reserve unit was ordered to report to the Middle East. Hawkan Haakanson Jr., nephew of tribal council member Raymond Chandler Sr., is awaiting deployment. On the Crow Reservation, families were praying for their loved ones as well. Tribal members held a ceremony yesterday for the 48 young men and women from the tribe who have been deployed. Get the Story:
