The majority of Wisconsin residents want state lawmakers to have more oversight of gaming compacts, according to a new poll.

The Badger Poll, conducted by the University of Wisconsin Survey Center and sponsored by The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and The Capital Times, found that 68 percent wanted the deals sent to the State Legislature for approval. Only 29 percent said the governor alone should have final say.

When asked whether gaming should be restricted to tribes or opened up to others, respondents were split. But slight more were in favor of two new open-ended deals recently finalized by Gov. Jim Doyle (D).

The poll contacted 507 adults.
