Ute / Navajo artist Oreland C. Joe Sr. is finishing work on a monument to the Lewis and Clark expedition.

"First Council" will depict the explorers' first meeting with tribal representatives. It will be placed at the Fort Atkinson State Historical Park in Nebraska, near where the meeting occurred 199 years ago.

Joe, of Kirtland, New Mexico, was picked by the Nebraska Arts Council to make the monument.
