The state of Washington and the federal government have agreed to pay $5 million to four children who were abused at foster home on the Nooksack Reservation, The Seattle Times reports.

The children were in legal custody of the state when placed in the home of a former tribal council member. No background checks were done on Leah Zapata's household, which included one with an assault conviction.

The state will pay $4 million, the federal government will pay $1 million and a local school district, alleged to have ignored signs of abuse, will pay $50,000.
