MONDAY, FEBRUARY 24, 2003

This week marks the 30th anniversary of the start of the 1973 standoff on the Pine Ridge Reservation of South Dakota.

On February 27, American Indian Movement activists and their supporters began a 71-day occupation at Wounded Knee, the site of an 1890 massacre. They were calling attention to government's failure to live up to its responsibilities and to a tribal government on the reservation they considered corrupt.

The federal government and the state of South Dakota responded with military force. A total of 12 were killed during the occupation.
