Battle over nominee seen as Supreme Court warm-up

The dispute over the nomination of a Hispanic lawyer to an appeals court is being viewed as a prelude to a Supreme Court battle, The Washington Post reports.

Republicans believe Miguel Estrada can help the party make inroads with minorities. Democrats say he comes with a hidden conservative agenda.

No one has retired from the Supreme Court but many say Bush wants to appoint a Hispanic Estrada, if confirmed, would sit on the D.C. Court of Appeals.
