N.M. lawmaker wants Devil's Highway changed

TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 18, 2003 A New Mexico lawmaker who represents part of the Navajo Nation wants to rename and renumber a highway. Rep. Ray Begaye, a Democrat from Shiprock, introduced a bill to rename U.S. 666 the "Sen. John Pinto Highway." John Pinto is a Navajo Code Talker who has served in the state Legislature for seven terms. Begaye's bill would renumber the highway, known for its fatalities and accidents, as well. He says the number is associated with death. Get the Story:
