Four Cherokee Nation citizens are running for principal chief of the Oklahoma tribe.

Incumbent Chad Smith is seeking re-election. Former chief Joe Byrd, whom Smith defeated in 1999, Robin Carter Mayes, an opposition leader, and L.S. Fields, a tribal housing official, have filed for office as well, The Daily Oklahoman reported.
