The January 29, 1863, massacre of at least 250 men, women and children of the Northwestern Shoshone Tribe needs to be "burned into our collective memory," The Salt Lake Tribune says in an editorial.

The tribe was nearly wiped out by Army soldiers on the Bear River in Idaho. The paper says the site needs to be a national historic site, calling on Idaho Sen. Larry Craig (R) to drop objections to plans for an official designation and visitors center.

"The extra amount of attention that will be focused on Lewis and Clark should be used to earn support from historians, Congress, foundations and the general public to properly mark the site of the Bear River Massacre and formally mourn those who died there," the paper says.
