New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson (D), former Energy Secretary during the Clinton administration, promised to make Native Americans "full partners" in the future of the state.

In his first State of the State Address, Richardson made several references to tribal governments, Indian gaming and Native Americans. He has appointed several tribal members and leaders to top positions in his administration.

"I want our Native Americans to be full partners in directing the future of the state we share. I want their input into government," he said. "And through their presence at all levels of government, it is my hope that all Native Americans will reach a greater understanding and trust of their state government."
