The chief of the Schaghticoke Tribal Nation of Connecticut asked the state Supreme Court on Thursday to throw out a criminal conviction against him.

Richard Velky said the state courts lack jurisdiction to meddle in the affairs of the tribe, which is state recognized. He was convicted of breach of peace and third-degree criminal mischief in an incident on tribal land that stemmed from a leadership dispute.
