The Department of Justice today will file a brief "narrowly tailored" to oppose the University of Michigan's affirmative action policy, according to news accounts.

Unnamed officials said the brief will not call for the reversal of a key 1978 Supreme Court case that allows for the use of race in college admissions but only under certain conditions. Instead, they said, it will focus specifically on the reasons why the Michigan policy is unconstitutional.
