For the past four years, Dr. Taylor McKenzie served as vice president of the Navajo Nation. He didn't draw a lot of media or public attention, though.

But his career as a physician gave him a special focus. A former doctor with the Indian Health Service, he said he was able to help an even greater amount of people.

"I got the chance to put my experience and my ideas to use when President Begaye asked me to be his vice president," he told The Farmington Daily-Times.

McKenzie retired from the IHS in 1995. He said he would like to continue working for IHS, or the Navajo Nation. He also might return to retirement.
