President Bush has ordered Department of Justice lawyers to prepare a Supreme Court brief opposing the affirmative action policy of a university, according to news accounts.

The accounts say Bush has not given final say over the friend of the court brief. It has to be submitted by Thursday to meet a deadline in the case, which was brought by three white students who were denied entry into the University of Michigan.

Bush has opposed the use of racial quotas in college admissions.
