THURSDAY, JANUARY 9, 2003

A bill to federally recognize the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina will be delayed pending a vote by tribal members on the tribe's traditional territory, the Associated Press reports.

The tribe is recognized by the state and has limited access to federal programs. Rep. Mike McIntyre (D-N.C.) plans to introduce a bill to restore full federal status.

Freshman Sen. Elizabeth Dole (R-N.C.) supports the tribe. According to The Charlotte Observer, she "cornered" Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell (R-Colo.) about the tribe's recognition bid almost as soon as she was sworn in on Tuesday.

Democratic Presidential candidate John Edwards (D-N.C.) is also backing the tribe, The Native American Times reported.
