WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 8, 2003

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has given its approval to a highway extension near Haskell Indian Nations University in Kansas.

The state Department of Transportation is undertaking the project but needed federal approval because it impacts wetlands. Haskell once owned the wetlands and students and alumni believe human remains are buried there.

The Wetlands Preservation Organization, a Haskell student and alumni group, plans to fight the Corps' approval.
