Fishkill blamed on Norton water policy

TUESDAY, JANUARY 7, 2003

The California Department of Fish and Game has released a report blaming the recent deaths of more than 30,000 fish on Secretary of Interior Gale Norton.

The Department of Interior had promised water for fish in the Klamath Basin. Area tribes depend on salmon and other species for subsistence and cultural purposes.

But after non-Indian farmers complained, Norton released water to them. Her action led to the massive fishkill last summer, the state report said.
