The only American Indian in the Senate has come to the defense of Trent Lott (R-Mississippi) over racially divisive remarks made by the incoming majority leader.

Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell (R-Colo.) told The Denver Post that Lott "made a mistake" by suggesting the nation would be better off if the races were segregated. "I've known Trent Lott for a long time. I've known him for 15 years, and I don't think he's got a prejudiced bone in his body," he said.

"I think I would be sensitive to it a little more than some other people would."

Campbell is one of several Republicans who are publicly backing Lott. Sen. Ted Stevens (Alaska) and Rick Santorum (Penn.) said they would fight Lott's ouster.
