Editorial: Tax tribes over tobacco
FRIDAY, DECEMBER 6, 2002

The Daily Oklahoman in an editorial today calls for tribes to share more of their tobacco revenues with the state.

The paper essentially backs a tax increase for the tribes but rejects it for everyone else. "At a time when Oklahomans are struggling to stay ahead of inflation, higher taxes are not a happy prospect," the paper writes.

But in reference ot the state's budget crisis: "The tribes could help by agreeing to pay more cigarette tax money to the state."

Incoming Governor Brad Henry (D) supports renegotiating tobacco compacts that are expiring. Currently, tribes remit 25 percent of their tax to the state.
