WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 4, 2002

The Heart of America Indian Center was founded in Kansas City, Kansas, by a Choctaw man and his wife who wanted to keep Indian culture alive.

Today, with drum and dance classes, that's still part of its mission. But the non-profit center also provides drug and alcohol counseling, food and clothing for low-income families and other services.

The center's annual budget is $66,000, drawn from federal grants and other sources.
