The Rapid City Journal in an editorial today praises the 26th annual Lakota Nation Invitational tournament as a boost to the local economy and a way to improve relations among Indians and non-Indians in South Dakota.

Drawing about 8,000 people to Rapid City, the tournament featured basketball and other sports games. Olympic gold medalist Billy Mills spoke and Native Voice, an Indian-owned newspaper, sponsored a film festival.

"It is our hope that the LNI tournament continues as a Rapid City fixture for a long time to come," the paper writes.

The winner of the basketball tournament was Custer High School's Wildcats. The team defeated the Pine Ridge Thorpes 78 to 52.

The LNI also featured a hand game tournament for the fifth year. Hand games require concentration, skill and a good dose of guesswork.
