After he lost his re-election bid to a candidate with tribal support, former senator Slade Gorton, Republican of Washington, said he felt helpless.

"I felt particularly frustrated because I was a regular citizen," he told The Seattle Times. "I wished I was back in the Senate where I could do some good,"

Well, Gorton got his wish. Two weeks ago, he said he received a call from incoming Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott (R-Miss.), asking if he wanted to join a presidential commission on the September 11 terrorist attacks.

Gorton works for the law firm of Preston, Gates & Ellis.
