Editorial: BIA changes a good first step

TUESDAY, DECEMBER 10, 2002 Proposed changes at the Bureau of Indian Affairs are a good first step, even if they don't address core issues of trust fund mismanagement, The Sioux Falls Argus Leader says in an editorial. The paper says Secretary Gale Norton and Assistant Secretary Neal McCaleb "haven't worked very quickly to solve" the trust fund mess. But additions of trust officers are the regional and reservation level should help, the paper says. "So what we have now is a cosmetic change," the editorial states. "But it's progress and progress that came about after talking to the tribes." Get the Story:
