MONDAY, DECEMBER 9, 2002 "With her scripted, photo-op advocacy of Bush environmental policies -- and a tough coal lobbyist running day-to-day operations backstage at her department -- Secretary of the Interior Gale Norton has gained a nickname, "the Stepford Secretary." Strangely, though, Norton has been keeping a low profile in this part of the West, where Interior has vast land holdings. It's doubly curious in that the president she serves made a big deal in 2000 of promising to get away from top-down decision making by distant Washington, D.C., officials. . ." Get the Story:
