Editorial: DOI reorg too little too late

MONDAY, DECEMBER 9, 2002 The Salt Lake Tribune in an editorial says the Bush administration's proposed reorganization of the Department of Interior is a "small and tardy response" to a federal judge overseeing the Indian trust debacle. The paper says the reforms "can hardly make the situation worse." But after more than a century of trust asset mismanagement, they "present only a faint hope that it will end anytime soon," the editorial states. The reorganization affects the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) and the Office of Special Trustee (OST). It adds trust-related positions at the agency and reservation level but largely changes the bureaucratic structure in Washington, D.C. Get the Story:
