DOI backs industry over tribe in court

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 6, 2002 The Bush administration has sided with a company who wants to develop a kitty litter plant next to the Reno Sparks Indian Colony of Nevada. Local permits for the 24-hour, 7-day-a-week clay mine and plant were denied in response to objections by the tribe, local residents and environmentalists. But in a court suit Oil-Dri Corp. has filed, the Department of Interior has filed a legal opinion backing the company's mining rights. Reno Sparks Chairman Arlan Melendez had asked Assistant Secretary Neal McCaleb to ask the department not to get involved. Get the Story:
