WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 4, 2002 John Herrington isn't the first American Indian to go into space. Technically, he's the second. Bill Pogue was aboard the final Skylab mission nearly 30 years ago. He is of Cherokee and Choctaw heritage, but he is not enrolled in any particular tribe. He did take into space a flag representing Oklahoma's tribes. He was later inducted into the Five Civilized Tribes Hall of Fame. Herrington, a member of the Chickasaw Nation of Oklahoma, is scheduled to return from his space shuttle mission today.
