Lumbee Tribe hopes for recognition

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 27, 2002 The Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina is seeking to gain full federal recognition through legislation. The tribe was hindered over the years by Sen. Jesse Helms (R-N.C.). But now that he is departing, officials will ask Rep. Mike McIntyre (D-N.C.) to introduce a bill to recognize the tribe. Incoming Sen. Elizabeth Dole (R) supports full recognition, a spokesperson said. Get the Story:
