Bush signs Homeland bill into law

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 26, 2002 President Bush on Monday signed the bill creating the Department of Homeland Security. Bush immediately appointed Tom Ridge as Secretary of Homeland Security. Ridge had been expected to receive the nomination. He currently heads the Homeland Security Office. Bush also appointed two others to start creating the new department, which will employ 170,000 from 22 existing federal agencies. The goal is to finalize the organization within a year.
