The New York Times presented a "crash course" on federal recognition in its Sunday magazine.

Written by Dirk Olin, national editor at The American Lawyer, the feature includes quotes by a Vermont Law School professor and Houma tribal member and an author. But it gives more space to failed Congressional candidate Jeff Benedict, who acknowledged that the U.S. has a "terrible track record of mistreating Indians" yet has called for a revival of termination.
