MONDAY, NOVEMBER 25, 2002

Lucio Gutierrez, a former military colonel with strong support of Indian leaders and activists, was elected president of Ecuador on Sunday.

Gutierrez in 2000 joined with tribes to overthrow then-president Jamil Mahuad. He defeated wealthy businessman Álvaro Noboa in yesterday's run-off.

Indian voters were behind Gutierrez's strong showing in the earlier election. Their movement, Pachakutik, and allies hold a dozen seats in the 100-member Congress.
