There have been eight assistant secretaries for Indian Affairs since the position was created in 1977. Nearly half have quit unexpectedly, The Lincoln Journal Star reports.

"It was probably the most challenging, frustrating and fulfilling experience in my professional career," Forrest Gerard, the first to hold the position and the first to resign from it, told the paper.

Ada Deer was the second to resign during the Clinton administration. Neal McCaleb, who will leave by the end of the year, is the third.
